It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 193.

I love all of my robot friends so much, and they are each so quirky and awesome—but holy moly, when it’s first thing in the morning, and I have just gotten into the hallway, and I’m met by Robot Group No. 48 it is a shock to the system that I can barely explain.

Robots No. 48 talk in unison, are always together, are stealthy and quiet, and always have that deep penetrating stare. They really are very sweet and kind, but I definitely need a sip of coffee before these two sneak up on me in the morning and ask me to play.

It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 193.

Robot No. 193 quietly came through the portal one day. We almost missed them because they were standing among the plants and being really quiet. When we saw they were there and went to welcome them their eyes got so big and it was like they wanted to melt into the floor.

We gave Robot No. 193 some space, helped get them settled, and allowed them to get used to our chaotic house. They started coming to dinners and hanging out in the garden with the others. They really enjoy being part of the group, but also just really want to stay off to the side sometimes, which we absolutely respect – we can be a lot – we’re just so happy to have them with us!

One day Robot No. 193 came to join me as I was sitting on the porch, and for some time we just sat in comfortable silence. But then I heard Robot No. 193 take a very deep breath and they looked at me and began to thank me for not fussing over their bag, and for letting them have their space, and for allowing them to just be their selves as they navigate all of this. I stammered because all the words were getting stuck in my throat, but I just wanted them to know that we are so happy to have them. We only want them as themselves, and whatever that looks like. We want them to feel at home, because it is their home. And I wanted to tell them how proud of them I am that they’ve found a way to do what they need to do so they can be where they want to be however that looks!

It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 198.

Robot No. 198 was so excited to learn about summer.  They hung out for a while with Robot No. 116 learning all about baseball, Robot No. 14 taught them all about summer sports, Robot No. 115 taught them the ins and outs of sandcastle building. Many of the other robot friends had inputs too – picnic food, parks to visit, how to position oneself so that the sun could be admired but not damage the gauges, visiting garden centres, and much more.

Robot No. 198 was sitting at the table one morning when I walked in. I asked if they were alright. They took a big robot sigh and they told me that they’ve come to a realization. Summer truly is the best season, and it holds the most magic and promise; but it also can feel like the heaviest because it feels like there’s an obligation to do everything and see everything and smash as much as possible into a very short timeframe.

I understood where they were coming from, and I realized I hadn’t told them my favourite part of summer. They almost rolled their eyes at me when they heard there was someone else with input about summer events. But I said to give me a chance, and then told them my favourite part of summer is being outside, watching the butterflies and bees doing their jobs, and watching the clouds float by.

Robot No. 198 just kind of blinked at me, and then excused themselves. They spent the rest of the morning on the patio doing just that.

Introducing Supermurgitroid Robot No. 161

It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 161.

Robot No. 161 and I were at the garden store with some of our other garden-loving friends and they got distracted in a big way. Have you seen all of the decorations that could go in a garden?! Even the pots are decorations! Everything can be vibrant and bright or simple earth-tones! You could have vibrant in your front yard and muted in your backyard! Their eyes were darting left and right and it began to be so quick that I was afraid they might short-circuit.

I asked them what they were trying to process, and they were calculating the total number of combinations one could have from all of the decorations they saw. We agreed to just call it a lot because I was afraid for their safety.

They asked Robot No. 47 if there was a spot for a few more decorations in our yard, and if they could pick out something. Robot No. 47 couldn’t ignore the excitement and energy that Robot No. 161 was feeling for this so they enthusiastically agreed. Robot No. 161 poured over each option, I almost thought we’d have to come back the next day because I wasn’t sure if they’d be able to pick before closing time!

Then their eyes landed on something, I saw Robot No. 161’s body jump with excitement as they reached for the plastic pink flamingo. They held it out in front of them like it was magical and sparkly, then pulled it close to their chest for a big squeeze. When they turned to look at me, there was a dreamy grin on their face. Robot No. 161 had found their perfect garden decoration and made each of us smile with how genuinely at peace they were.

Introducing Supermurgitroid Robot No. 200

It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 200.

Do-Gooder Robot No. 200 came rolling into the house ready to explore the human world! They wanted to know all about humans and how they function, and what makes them tick. They were so interested in human interaction and just wanted to sit and observe people for many hours. They had big plans, a notebook full of questions and I realized it was laid out like a science experiment!

I found Do-Gooder Robot No. 200 at the mall one day, notebook in hand, gauges beeping and booping. They were getting very close to people sometimes, and I could tell it was unnerving some. I had to take them aside and explain that most people would appreciate a space invader, and that they’d likely get more truer results if they observed from further away because they’d get to see people more naturally interacting.

After about a week of Do-Gooder Robot No. 200 spending time observing and collecting data from afar, they came home and announced that they now needed to process the data. They locked themselves in their room and we could hear loud clicking, beeping, boops. They were in there for a few days before we decided we better check on them.  We were shooed away. So, we waited.

When Do-Gooder Robot No. 200 finally emerged from their room, they were wobbly and having trouble rolling on their feet. They were off-kilter like they needed an alignment. Their gauges seemed twisted up too.  We rushed to see how we could help.

Do-Gooder Robot No. 200 started sputtering that the data didn’t make sense, they mumbled about no logical connections and no concrete fixed constants…they were quite unintelligible for a while. We finally got them calmed down, but they never really straightened out again.

They asked me how we do it, how we manage our world, and how it all works. I didn’t have answers to everything, but I did tell them that sometimes humans get help when they need it. And right away they wanted to be part of that help, so they decided to be a Do-Gooder for the Canadian Mental Health Association, and they’re hopeful that by being a Do-Gooder they’ll be able to help make someone’s world a better when they need it.

Introducing Supermurgitroid Robot No. 156

via GIPHY

It’s R Day my friends, and I would like to introduce you to Supermurgitroid Robot No. 156.

When Robot No. 156 came through the portal, we barely got to say hello and welcome them and they were already asking questions about dinosaurs, archaeologists, paleontologists, and prehistoric times. To say they’re enthusiastic about dinosaurs is a gross understatement, but I don’t think we have a word that quite encompasses all of it.

They were thrilled when they found out that Morden Manitoba has fossils of the Mosasaurus, and Drumheller has the interactive museum, Regina has the world’s largest T-Rex, and British Colombia has the dinosaur discovery centre. They are beside themselves that Canada has such a rich history of dinosaurs, and that there are so many places they can learn more about them!

We had to commemorate Robot No. 156’s first visit to the museum and we got them a toy dinosaur. They couldn’t be happier running around the house roaring and stomping about!
